Day 3 Mediterranean Adventures: DUBROVNIK

Today, we are in Dubrovnick, Croatia.  This is on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. We have sailed all night, around the tip (boot heel) of Italy.  In the middle of the day, we sailed through the Straights of Messina. We had a harbor pilot on board to navigate us through the narrower waters of the straight.  This evening, the ship's captain told us the next time we go through these same straights,  we should be on hand to watch the harbor pilot come on board as in other ports, they usually board at about 6-8 knots, but these guys insist on going 16 knots as they board.

We are touring Dubrovnik on our own and Bob is our tour guide.  We thought we would use the city buses to go into Old Town, but they only take kuna, so we have to use the Holland America Shuttle. Once inside the city walls, Bob and Jerry decide to tackle walking around on top of the old city wall--about a mile and a half.  Old Town City Wall.

Since it is so hot, Lydia and I stay down in the town square--along with several thousand others from at least 6  mega cruise ships in the harbor. The shops  all cater to tourists and we are overwhelmed with all the choices. We each purchase a small print illustrative of the Old Town City.

The heat has whipped us all ( way more so than Rome) and once the guys come down from the wall, we decide to head back to the ship for lunch.  It was gloriously cool and so refreshing from the heat of the old city.  After lunch we head up to the top of the ship and the Crow's Nest for a very peaceful afternoon with a vista of the city before us.
